Larus – the small tactical naval UAS
HENSOLDT supports the German navy and its requirements on the AeroVironment Puma II AE to provide an optimal tactical, naval-capable system. Known as Larus, the UAS supports operational boats (RHIB) on naval missions. It offers rapid operational capability and payload changes thanks to its modular design.
Operators can easily switch between flight control modes to optimise performance for different tasks. Emphasising reconnaissance, the Larus delivers valuable intelligence swiftly. Moreover, it makes in-flight mission adjustments effortless, enabling real-time responses to evolving situations.

Key benefits
Maximising performance and valueStrategic advantages
- Real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities over a large area, giving naval forces comprehensive situational awareness
- Continuous monitoring and data collection without risking human personnel
- UxS can augment the capabilities of manned aircraft and ships, enabling the navy to cover a larger area and perform more operations simultaneously
Operational benefits
- Generally more cost-effective to operate and maintain compared to manned aircraft, thus reducing operational expenses
- UxS can be quickly launched and operated from naval vessels, providing on-demand support without the need for complex logistical arrangements
Assistance in search and rescue operations
- Quick location and identification of distressed personnel or vessels in the maritime environment
- UxS is able to stay airborne for extended periods and can therefore cover large areas of the sea surface more quickly and efficiently than manned aircraft or vessels
- Can be used to deliver medical supplies or communication equipment to survivors until rescue vessels or aircraft arrive on the scene
