Cutting-edge imaging, radar, and customised systems for enhanced underwater performance and security
U-31 (S181) is the first Type 212A submarine of the German Navy...It was built by TKMS at the shipyards of Thyssen Nordseewerke of Emden and Howaldtswerke at Kiel. The baptism took place on March 20, 2002, and the submarine was ceremonially put into service along with its sister ship U 32 by German Minister of Defence Peter Struck in Eckernförde on October 19, 2005. U 31 is powered by one diesel engine and an electric motor driven by nine fuel cells, making it virtually undetectable...Korvettenkapitän Bert Petzold is the submarine's commanding officer.

Our history

Thanks to modern sensor technologies, submarines can be equipped with advanced capabilities as stealthy platforms for surveillance and reconnaissance. HENSOLDT´s experience in systems designed for underwater use dates back over a hundred years.

In 1903, we brought the world’s first fully functional periscope to life, in use with the German submarine “Forelle”. Since then, we have continuously strived to push technological boundaries and set new standards for periscopes and optronic masts – as we do with our latest submarine solutions.

Advanced periscope and optronic mast solutions

HENSOLDT’s periscope and optronic mast solutions deliver superior imaging and stealth capabilities, essential for modern submarine operations.

Equipped with high-resolution and infrared cameras, our optronic masts allow for comprehensive surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) in all lighting and weather conditions. Innovative Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) provide streamlined, intuitive control, enhancing operational awareness and mission effectiveness.

Specialised submarine radar technology

HENSOLDT’s submarine radar solutions are designed to ensure discreet and reliable detection in challenging maritime environments.

With advanced clutter handling and a reduced probability of intercept, our radars enhance operational security by remaining undetected. These systems are engineered to require minimal maintenance, providing cost-efficient, long-term performance and exceptional reliability for extended deployments.
