Electromagnetic discretion is essential for the safety and stealth of naval defence vessels. However, the structures and machinery used in ships and submarines are made of ferromagnetic materials, which, as a result of the Earth’s magnetic field, generate magnetic anomalies – therefore creating magnetic indiscretion.
These anomalies can be detected by sensors on underwater mines located in coastal waters or in ports as well as by sensors embedded in patrol aircraft.
Therefore, the challenge is to develop a degaussing system that protects naval platforms by significantly reducing the magnetic signature that would otherwise leave them open to detection and vulnerable to attack.
Our solution
Electromagnetic discretion is essential for the safety and stealth of naval defence vessels. To achieve this, HENSOLDT offers magnetic degaussing solutions and active shaft grounding systems.
For example, it has developed Mask, a range of extremely reliable degaussing systems with centralised or decentralised architecture suitable for installation on new vessels (ships, aircraft carriers, submarines, etc.). Mask can also be retrofitted or used to completely replace obsolete degaussing systems.
