MILDS AN/AAR-60 Block 2

Missile launch detection sensors against IR-guided missiles
MILDS Block 2 Helicopter

The challenge

Passive, infrared-guided anti-aircraft missiles pose an increasing and undeniable threat to tactical aircraft and their crews. Indeed, many of the aircraft lost in current and recent conflicts have been downed by ground-based IR SAMs.
Your crews in the field require quick and reliable detection and declaration of incoming threats that virtually eliminate false alarms. The system should work in tandem with crew-alert and the automatic release of countermeasures to decoy the missile, permitting mission completion and the safe return of the crew and their aircraft.

Our solution

HENSOLDT developed the Missile Launch Detection System AN/AAR-60 (MILDS) to meet this threat.

The original configuration of MILDS meets the requirements for installation on board a wide range of tactical rotary-wing and wide-body platforms including NH-90, Tiger, UH-60, CH-47, C-130 and P-3.
With thousands of sensors sold to date, MILDS has earned a worldwide reputation for reliability and effectiveness.
It is a passive, true-imaging sensor device optimised to detect the radiation signature in the UV solar blind spectral band as it is emitted from the exhaust plume of a hostile missile on approach.

Features and benefits

Features

  • Passive sensor detects UV radiation emitted by a missile
  • Operates in the UV solar blind spectral range
  • Delivers passive, true imaging
  • Sophisticated algorithms classify missile threats in real time
  • Indicates direction and maximum time of missile arrival
  • Two system architectures: MILDS Block 2, a plug-in replacement for legacy MILDS, and MILDS F for fast platforms such as fighter or transport aircraft
  • Deployable on UAV as well
  • Main sub-system of the Airborne Missile Protection System AMPS

Benefits

  • Prevents false alarms caused by sunlight and the natural surroundings
  • Standard interfaces for connection to aircraft systems
  • Can be configured with 4, 5 or 6 sensors
  • Full spherical coverage possible for maximum protection of crew and platform
  • High sensitivity for early warnings at long range affords maximum time for countermeasures
  • Can handle up to 8 threats per system
  • Difficult to deceive
  • No emissions from the sensors (stealth)
  • No cooling; short activation time
