Ulm/Germany, 14th December 2022 – The DLR Senate advises the Executive Board, supervises and decides on the scientific and technical orientation of the organisation. In addition to its supervisory function, the body advises and supports on important issues such as the further development of DLR. The Senate is made up of 33 members from the fields of science, business and industry as well as the governmental sector. The chairman is a state secretary from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), which oversees DLR within the federal government. In addition to her membership in the Senate, Evi Aicher takes on the deputy chair of the Senate. In this role, she will preside over Senate meetings when the State Secretary is unable to attend.
With its focus on aviation, space, energy, transport, security, and digitisation, DLR is the research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Beyond its own research, DLR acts as the German Space Agency on behalf of the Federal Government and is responsible for planning and implementing Germany's space activities.
“In addition to advancing and supporting space issues, my primary goal during my tenure is to advance the transfer of know-how and technology between DLR institutes in all of the above-mentioned focus areas and industry. There is great potential here that has not yet been sufficiently exploited and that can be of great benefit to our society,” said Evi Aicher.
She elaborated: “On the one hand, membership in the Senate facilitates networking beyond the space sector into many other industries and research institutions, and on the other hand, the increased transfer of know-how and technology, which I fully support, shall result in partnerships between HENSOLDT and new DLR institutes, thus strengthening our industrial competitiveness.”
Overall, more than ever, space is key to solving global challenges. It is also of central importance for HENSOLDT to position itself in core areas such as environment/climate, knowledge/innovation, security, communication, mobility, and technology. “Especially for HENSOLDT, military space applications will have an increasingly strategic importance, as space will also play a central role in the field of defence and security and is part of solutions for the future,” explained Aicher. “This is an opportunity to open up new market areas in the future, because the knowledge gained in space shapes important decisions in business, science, politics and society.”
Space has long been an integral part of our everyday lives. From HENSOLDT's point of view, the trends and innovations in space include new technologies that integrate radar and optical systems from all areas – sea, land, air, space – into a combined multistatic network. Another innovation is the meaningful integration of the latest developments in artificial intelligence into space systems. For military space applications, there is a growing need for innovative technologies for SIGINT, COMINT and OSINT reconnaissance applications, early warning and responsive satellite delivery (Responsive Space).
“These are exciting new challenges that fascinate and motivate me,” said Evi Aicher, looking forward to her four-year tenure.
