Air Defence System of the Bundeswehr: Rheinmetall, Diehl and HENSOLDT are lining up together

Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH (Bremen), Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG (Überlingen) and HENSOLDT Sensors GmbH (Taufkirchen) signed a joint agreement for cooperation in the context of a special partnership (Arbeitsgemeinschaft or ARGE) to submit a tender for the future German short range and very short range protection air defence system (LVS NNbS).

NNbS is intended to close the Bundeswehr's current capability gap in the protection of ground troops in action as well as in the protection of command posts and real estate. Image: Diehl Defence

The project NNbS aims at filling the current capability gap for the protection of ground troops during operation as well as securing tactical operation centers and sites against air threats in short range and very short range.

The objective of the three companies is, to provide a national and low-risk solution that is quickly available with the help of commercially available systems and system components. The conceptual system design of ARGE NNbS mainly resorts to proven systems and subsystems by means of integration of components that have already been in use within the Bundeswehr.

A further special focus of ARGE NNbS is put on extensive logistic supply of the short range and very short range protection air defence system from within Germany.

The ARGE disposes of the prerequisites, qualifications and expertise to meet all the customer's needs thanks to the concentration of complementary core competences of national bidders.

With its divisions Electronic Solutions and Vehicle System, Rheinmetall contributes its technological expert knowledge and years of experience in development and delivery of defence systems, especially in the fields of vehicles, communication and integration.

Diehl Defence specializes in the development and manufacturing of guided missiles and has established itself with modern system solutions for ground-based air defence on the international market.

In its capacity as supplier of national key technology, HENSOLDT contributes its know-how and battle-tested products such as radars. All this under consideration of comprehensive product commonalities, for example within the context of product family concepts, especially in the spheres airspace surveillance and classification and identification.
